- A wealthy merchant and his family fall destitute when their house burned and the merchant's fleet of ships sank at sea. Beauty, the youngest of the children in the family, is the only one who smiles as she sees the good in everything while settling in a cottage. The merchant discovers a castle on a hill where he meets the lone occupant named the Beast. Beauty is brought to the castle by her father to introduce her to the Beast
