Summary
Economic downturns. The farm crisis. Retreat of retail businesses. Urban blight. Job losses. A massive flood of epic proportions. Downtown Cedar Rapids, Iowa, experienced the impact of all of these challenges, each of which could devastate a community on its own. This downtown, however, has managed not only to rebound, but to thrive in the face of adversity, due in large part to the financial backing and leadership of a group of business people who were, and remain, invested in their community. The 2001 Development Corporation was initiated because those business leaders realized something dramatic was needed to breathe life back into a faltering downtown. Other communities may find inspiration in this account of how one city found a way to overcome a multitude of obstacles to create a brighter future
